The Head of Travel Retail and Luxury, Airports is a senior leadership role responsible for the strategic development, commercial performance, and operational excellence of all duty-free and retail concessions across AD Airports. The role focuses on maximizing non-aeronautical retail revenues while delivering a world-class passenger shopping experience aligned with Abu Dhabi’s vision of becoming a global aviation and travel hub. The Head of Travel Retail and Luxury will drive innovation, strengthen concessionaire partnerships, optimize the retail portfolio, and ensure retail excellence across multiple business lines while enhancing ADA’s luxury brand reputation, convenience, and service standards.
Responsibilities
- Define and execute the travel retail strategy in alignment with ADA commercial strategy and corporate objectives.
- Manage the travel retail budget, including planning, allocation, monitoring, and performance assessment.
- Develop and maintain a long-term masterplan for airport retail offerings, including passenger segmentation, premiumization, category mix, and local/sustainable brand integration.
- Identify and implement initiatives to increase spend per passenger (SPP) and overall retail revenues.
- Lead commercial negotiations with global and regional retail concessionaires across duty-free, luxury, fashion, electronics, and specialty categories.
- Develop concession and operating models, including minimum guarantees, revenue-share agreements, joint ventures, and management contracts.
- Oversee selection, onboarding, and ongoing management of retail partners to ensure alignment with ADA standards and brand positioning.
- Monitor global airport retail trends, passenger consumption behavior, and competitive benchmarks.
- Ensure retail operations are integrated with passenger flows, terminal design, and airport operations.
- Set and monitor KPIs for partners, vendors, and internal teams covering sales performance, guest satisfaction, operational efficiency, and compliance.
- Drive digital innovation in retail, including e-commerce, loyalty programs, and data-driven marketing.
- Oversee planning, development, and refurbishment of retail outlets, including CapEx approvals, ROI analysis, and design oversight.
- Guide design, branding, and construction of premium, passenger-centric retail environments.
- Champion sustainability, ESG initiatives, and local brand integration in retail developments.
- Lead a multidisciplinary team of commercial managers, contract managers, and retail specialists.
- Foster a performance-driven culture with clear accountability and development pathways. Mentor and develop Emirati talent in line with ADA’s Emiratization strategy.
Requirements and Skills
Education & Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Business, Retail Management, or related field. MBA preferred.
Experience
- Minimum 10 years’ experience in retail, travel retail, or airport commercial management.
- At least 7 years in senior leadership roles.
- Proven track record managing multi-site airport retail portfolios or luxury retail operations.
- Experience in airports, aviation, or large-scale transport hubs is highly desirable.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong commercial negotiation skills with international retail brands and concessionaires.
- Deep understanding of global passenger trends, luxury retail, and Middle Eastern retail markets.
- Strong leadership and team development capabilities.
- Strategic mindset with a focus on commercial performance and guest experience.
- Ability to manage large budgets, CapEx, and ROI-driven retail planning.
- Strong knowledge of retail operations, KPI management, and digital retail innovation.
