ICU Staff Nurse, Riyadh, KSA

DescriptionThe staff nurse is accountable to the Intensive Care Unit Charge Nurse for the delivery of high quality care of the patients at Dallah Hospital. The post holder is responsible for ensuring attainment of agreed clinical standards and professional development supported by colleagues and the Director of Nursing.
During the time period for which she is responsible, assesses the overall needs of the individual patients, assists in preparation and implements the nursing care process as indicated to ensure optimal patient care.
Day-to-day activities can include:Provide direct care, evaluate care given including patients response and document nursing care to patients medical record.
Give bed bath to very ill patients and prevention or pressure ulcer.
Serve and feed patients.
Escorts to other departments/ units are required.
Monitor?s stock level of consumables for re-ordering.
Assist in ensuring safe keeping of patient?s belongings and valuables in accordance with agreed policy.
Reassess and document the proposed revision of interventions and desired outcomes.
Take the nursing history, summarize data, and state nursing diagnosis and patient care needs.
Observe and record signs, symptoms and behaviors, including the physiological status of patients, present the assessment of changes, the proposed revision of interventions, and desired outcomes.
Deliver designated nursing intervention to assigned patients that are consistent with the stated medical plan of care.
Perform admission, discharge and transfer procedures, and assist others with patient?s activities and care.
Notify appropriate nursing and medical staff to changes in the patient?s status.
Perform or assist others to perform proper aseptic technique, isolation procedures and infection control measure.
Maintain patient?s privacy and confidentiality of information and records at all times.
Prepares equipment and aids physician during examination and treatment of patient.
Responds to life-saving situation based upon nursing standards and protocol.
Assist common medical procedures and therapies performed in the unit include; arterial, central venous and pulmonary artery line placement, Chest tube placement and removal, intubation and extubation, temporary cardiac pacing, mechanical ventilation, intra-aortic balloon, counterpulsation, continuous veno-venous hemofiltration, hemodialysis and etc.
Monitors and adjusts specialized equipment used on patients, interprets and records electronic displays, such as intracranial pressures, central venous pressures, pulmonary artery pressures and cardiac rhythms from cardiac monitors, respirators, ventilators, manometers and etc.
Monitors different types of catheters, leads and tubing for proper placement and functioning.
Initiates corrective action whenever information from monitoring / life support equipment shows adverse symptomatology.
Documents all care information concisely, accurately and completely, in a timely manner in the appropriate format and on the appropriate forms.
Consults and coordinates with healthcare team members to assess, plan, implement and evaluate patient care plans.
Care for dead and manage bereavements.Maintains continuity of care during take-over and handover reports, ensuring that the communication is clear and accurate at all times.
Ensures that doctors? orders and patient management plans are followed and that appropriate steps are taken, including immediate notification of the resident on-call, of any deterioration from the expected course of the patient?s condition.
Ensures that the appropriate records of the patients? progress are maintained according to the hospital policies and procedures.
Ensure the safety of the patient, relatives and staff. Reporting untoward incident / accident / staff sickness to the Sister / Charge Nurse.
Maintain current knowledge of medications and their correct administration based on age and patient clinical conditions. Calculate, prepare, monitor, discontinue fluids and medication drips. Reports adverse reaction to medications.
Take an active role in the prevention and control of infection.
Contribute to the induction of new staff acting as a mentor when appropriate.
Participate in the Quality Improvement Program within his / her area of responsibilities.
Be committed to further development of own clinical skills and knowledge actively seeking learning opportunities as appropriate.
Ensures that the record of all drugs, IV fluids, etc, is up-to-date as required by the Pharmacy, and ensures that the rules and regulations governing the storage and custody of scheduled drugs and narcotics are strictly observed at all times.
Maintain skill and knowledge in using various medical devices such as ECG machine, Defibrillator, Infusion and Syringe Pump, Ventilator, ABG machine, Cardiac monitor and other equipment / machine used in Intensive Care Unit.
Maintain skills and knowledge by participating various nursing education programs, in-service training, nursing symposium, workshops & etc.
Ensure that the necessary financial records are maintained for the Finance Department.
Staff should be competent as follows:
Provides care for patient on mechanical ventilator.
Provides care for patient receiving thrombolytic therapy.
To maintain patent airway.
Provides care for patient with tracheostomy.
Provides an effective care for patient with central lines.
Provides age related and culturally appropriate care to the patient with CVAD.
Performs arterial puncture, initiates and maintains arterial pressure lines and arterial pressure monitoring.
Provides age related physiological care and psychological support during a diagnostic or therapeutic procedure.Provides care for patient requiring skeletal and blockade.
Initiates cardiac monitoring and performs an analysis of cardiac monitoring rhythm strips.
Provides age appropriate care and management for a patient requiring defibrillation or cardiac version.
To be able to maintain patient airway.
Provides care for patient at the end of life.
Serves as guide to fluid replacement.
Participate in patient and family education to help patients and families to better understand and participate in their care and make well informed care decisions.This job description is not an exhaustive list of accountabilities and activities. RequirementsTwo years post-basic experience, six months of which must be in the specialtyPrevious experience in Middle Eastern healthcare.Good command of English LanguageAppropriate qualification and statutory nursing registration in the country from where recruited. BSN / RN.Post-basic course qualification in the specialty.Valid BLS, ACLS, PALS certificate.
