JOB SUMMARY

The Head Nurse- NSY/NICU consults with the Nursing Supervisor concerning administrative, professional and clinical issues and assumes operational responsibility of the entire Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and Nursery. Is responsible for continuous quality improvement, budgeting, customer & staff feedback, training and development.



JOB SUMMARY

Is responsible for continuous quality improvement, budgeting, customer & staff feedback, training and development.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Operational Duties

Directs and supervises Nursing services personnel within the Obstetrics program in accordance with the Hospital, governmental bodies (MOH) and other regulatory standards.

Assumes 24 hour management of NICU and Nursery.

Prepares work schedules, assigns personnel, evaluates work performance and makes recommendations for personnel actions and adjusts staffing to provide appropriate coverage and to meet the needs of the client.

Conducts daily inspection of assigned patient care areas for compliance with policies, procedures, regulations, infection control and risk management standards, and takes corrective actions/ makes recommendations where violations occur in order to rectify the situation.

Undertakes responsibility in leading day-to-day operations and upholds clinical practice standards of the NICU and Nursery.

Directs maintenance of departmental facilities, equipment, supplies and materials to promote efficiency, health, comfort, and safety of patients and staff.

Ensures availability of adequate supply of consumable and non-consumable for patient care requirement, through a systematic inventory and ordering process.

Maintains a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for patients and families in accordance with Hospital standards.

Ensures accurate maintenance of patients’ medical records and confidentiality of information contained therein.

Prepares written documentation as required by the Nursing department, and maintains appropriate records and statistics as directed.

Acts as liaison with the Medical staff to coordinate Medical and Nursing management of patient care.

Serves as a resource person to Nursing personnel under him/her in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating nursing care provided.

Works cooperatively with other departments of NMH Healthcare, the community and professional organizations to ensure quality services.

Formulates departmental monthly report as directed by the Department.

Assists in the preparation of the fiscal budget and makes appropriate recommendation.

Contributes in the implementation of total Quality Management programmes aimed at best practice methods within a climate of customer focus.

Consults with Nursing Administration concerning management of assigned areas and all related matters.

Participates in the development and implementation of departmental goals & objectives, philosophy and mission statement.

Provides staff development and education programmes in consultation with Clinical Instructor and Area leader

Assists in the process of selection, orientation and training, and initiates performance evaluation of Department personnel.

Attends meetings as required, and participates on committees as requested.

Performs other related duties as assigned by the Nursing Supervisor..


JOB REQUIREMENTS

Education : Bachelor’s Degree/Diploma in Nursing with Post Basic/Graduate Certificate in Neonatal Nursing. Current CPR/BLS certification. 1st Line Management Certificate/Diploma and Newborn Resuscitation Program is an advantage.

Experience : 6 years clinical experience with 3-4 years’ experience in an Ob/Gyn. facility (of which recent experience has been spent as a staff nurse in Ob/Gyn. wards).

Experience in Neonatal, Labor and delivery ward is an advantage.

Service for more than 5 years in NMH is preferred.

Licensing: Valid License from Ministry of Health to work as a Registered Nurse.

Other Skills

Technical skills: Knowledge and skills in mechanical ventilator, CPAP machine, cardiac monitor, apnea monitor, incubators & resuscitaire warmer; disaster & evacuation plan; and various nursing tasks such as IV Therapy, ECG, vital signs monitoring, checking blood sugar, caring for wounds, etc. Knowledge of sterilization techniques, safety measures, good hygiene, environmental sanitation and infection control standards.

Administrative Skills: Leadership, Decision Making and Teaching skills; Self-Motivated, Observant, Flexible and Adaptable; Ability to Multi-Task, take Initiative, Assess, Plan, Organize ,Prioritize, Delegate responsibilities and Work under pressure without supervision

Soft Skills : Excellent Communication and Inter-Personal skills.

Language Skills: Good in written and spoken English, Arabic is an advantage

Computer Skills: MS Office (Word, Excel, Outlook), Internet and Hospital MIS
